Eccles 1.5 – 4.5 Chorlton
D Division
Summer League.
This match was not one of Eccles better ones – as you can see by the result!
On paper Eccles were the stronger team, but they failed to make it past the finishing line as Chorlton won the last D Division match of the Summer League Season.
Super club Chorlton took 1st and 2nd place, Marple 3rd, and Eccles placed 4th out of 6 teams.
Well played to all who took part! In the end Chorlton not only proved they were the better team but also the stronger club. This is why Chorlton is known as one of Manchester’s Super Clubs.
Team Eccles are enjoying building up their strength of gameplay and are gradually climbing up the chess ladder. We hope to be up there one day running alongside the big boys and to be also known as one of Manchester’s Super Clubs. We are confident that we are on the right path – so many thanks to everyone for helping to make this happen.
Man of the Match: Chagdarsuren Batbileg (Chag)
This is the second time Chag has been nominated as MoM this season. He was the only Eccles player to have won his game, and it was great to see his face light up with triumph.
Chag undoubtedly saved Eccles from almost total annihilation and well played to him for saving the face of Eccles.
Chag – you need to play more, and I hope you get the opportunity to do so during the next Autumn/Winter League which is soon to start.
Chag said this about his game: “We played the Italian Game. The opening was equal then on move 8 my opponent spent quite a lot of time thinking about his next move and I was up almost 40 minutes. After move 20 my opponent was low on time and blundered a piece, after a few more moves he resigned.”
A bit of chess history: The Italian game is one of the oldest Chess openings. Analysis about the Italian game have been found from as early as the fifteenth century, by Italian players such as Damiano and Greco, hence its name !
Why play the main line of the Italian game? White’s aim is to slowly build up the position. Some of the most common ideas are to open the centre with c3 and d4, to expand on the Queenside with a4 and b4, and to bring the Bishop from c4 to c2 via b3, in Ruy López style.
The Italian Game has been a popular opening for centuries and it’s still played at the highest level today.
