Eccles Community Chess Club – Autumn/Winter Chess League 2026/27 Results, Awards and Statistics
Last season Barbara Farrar captained five teams across three different league. This achievement was only made possible with the help of other team members who stepped in to act as captains when required.
Managing five teams in three leagues proved challenging and resulted in some unforeseen fixture clashes. A big thank you goes to all the clubs that helped rearrange fixtures and resolve scheduling issues throughout the season.
Eccles demonstrated outstanding determination and team spirit by avoiding the default of any matches. Unfortunately, one board was defaulted in the Warrington League after teenage player Micha Yaschera forgot he had a game that night due to a girlfriend distraction. Mick Connor missed his game when his alarm clock failed to go off. Both players apologised and assured the club that it would not happen again. Their apologies were accepted.
A total of 67 matches were played during the season. Eccles fielded approximately 332 boards, resulting in 664 individual games of chess played.

An impressive achievement for any club.
There were no complaints or disputes made against Eccles during the season. However, Eccles did submit a complaint regarding a match against Swinton & Worsley, who failed to attend without prior notice. This resulted in several Eccles juniors and entry-level players making a wasted journey. Swinton & Worsley later issued an apology, which was accepted, and it is hoped that this unfortunate oversight will not be repeated in the future.

The Winter/Autumn 2026/27 season was a tremendous success. Club members worked together, supporting and encouraging one another throughout the season. This spirit of cooperation helped create harmony among all the clubs participating in competitive chess across our local communities and long may it continue.
The Warrington, Bolton and Stockport leagues recognise the importance of having rules while also maintaining a welcoming environment that encourages greater participation in chess. The aim is to strike a balance between effective governance and making competitive chess accessible and enjoyable to as many people as possible.
Well played team Eccles and here’s to a new season of chess taking part in the South East Lancashire Summer League (SELSCL) and here is the Fixture List..
SOCIAL CHESS NIGHTS
Eccles Community Chess Club. 21 Church Street Eccles M30 0DF is a short walking distance from the train, tram and bus stations, free local parking.
Monday Night: Ladies, learners and entry level players with tuitoring and mentoring from 7pm until 8.15pm. Occasional guest speakers from 8.30pm until Midnight alonside friendly games. Entry Fee £2.
Wednesday Night: ‘Chess is Fun for Everyone’ with friendly or ECF Rated games. From 7pm until late. All levels of play welcome! Entry Fee £2.
