Eccles 1 – 5 Chorlton
A Division
South East Lancashire Summer Chess League
This was the last A Division match of the Summer League. All the games were more closely matched than the result reflects, with Superclub Chorlton taking first place.
They were by far the strongest club in the Summer League, placing first in all divisions in which they competed (A – B – D and E) This is why Chorlton is known as one of Manchester’s Superclubs.

t won’t be long before Eccles are reaping the benefits of what we have sown. We hope to be winning more games on a regular basis. Eccles’ dreams of running alongside the super clubs next season is in our grasp due to team players building up their playing strength during the summer season. We also have new and exciting players starting. We are sure that this will result in us being recognised for giving up our precious time volunteering to promote chess in the community of Eccles, Salford and Greater Manchester.
The new autumn/winter season will be very interesting considering all the changes that have recently taken place in the Manchester League and the new way it’s been structured. So it’s all to play for next season and I think it will be the best season ever for Eccles as they have their sights set on winning back the Silver Queen whilst trying to capture the king!

Man of the Match: Captain David Toole:
Dave joined Eccles Chess two years ago, he could see the Club’s potential and recognised that I needed help in moving the Club forward. David agreed to captain the A and B Divisions of the Manchester League and the A Division in the Stockport League. He has been captaining teams in league matches for nearly fifty years and was the only Eccles player to have won his game against the Chorlton team.
Dave did a fantastic job as as always rallying the troops as best he could during the summer, when many of our players were unavailable, and keeping us focussed.
Dave said he is more than happy to keep captaining the A and B divisions and taking Eccles through to the next season. He said he hopes to bring more silverware to the Eccles home match mantlepiece and he can’t wait for the challenges ahead and the battles over the boards to commence.
This is what Dave said about his game:
My opponent Neville Barnes provoked a tactical skirmish in the opening. I spent 15 minutes finding the best move but it involved sacrificing two pawns and the queens would have been exchanged, so I had to rely on the active pieces as compensation. I managed to keep control and then it converted into a completely winning Knight vs Bishop ending. Nice game!
As one season ends another begins with three matches on the same night!
