MCF – E Division

Well played Swinton! Nice win!! Unfortunately the best of the Eccles E Division players were unable to take part in this away match due to it falling on Halloween night.

Everyone had already made arrangements before I asked if they could play. I really should have asked much sooner. So if a match falls on an a significant date please remember to give yourself more time to get a team together. The next away match was Tuesday 05/11/24 which was bonfire night and was also the American Elections but forward thinking Eccles team Captain Dave Toole had his players signed up weeks before to ensure early commitment. So yeah, let’s be more like Dave!

Man of the Match: Chris Lysons.

Chris first started playing chess at the age of nine and signed up to play for Eccles in 2003 with the late Dez Peryman. Chris’s Dad John also played for Eccles from the 1980’s and captained the third team for many years – it was only natural that Chris should follow on in his dad’s footsteps.

Chris said, playing chess is big part of his life and likes to play as much as he can. Not only does he take part in League Matches but also joins in car shares to get him to tournaments outside the Eccles, Salford catchment area.

This is what Chris said about his game:

I played the Nimzo Indian Defence and applied pressure which could have meant his opponent Edward Chu would have ended up with double pawns. Edward was struggling which way to castle, he eventually decided to castle kingside but I thought queenside would have been a better choice, I found a weakness and pressured his opponent into a Checkmate.
