Great result for Eccles, even though I don’t mind saying so myself.
Eccles were lucky to have fielded a much stronger team than super club Chorlton on this occasion. It’s not often Eccles beat Chorlton but when we do it feels great and I’m sure the feeling is mutual. Bad luck Chorlton and well played Eccles!!

Dave Boulden is Brill!!
David used to play for Denton Chess Club before it closed down. When he was working in Salford he popped into the Malaga Drift which had become the new home for Chess in Eccles whilst I was trying to build up the club. We were all just coming out of COVID Lockdown where I hosted online chess matches five nights a week for two years. Dave said, he enjoyed his evenings so much that he just kept on playing for Eccles and has never looked back. Thank you David for joining the Eccles Chess Family, we wouldn’t be the same without you. You’ve been an absolute star with the way you’ve volunteered so much time in supporting and keeping team Eccles together. You’re are a Godsend!
David’s Chess History…
I learnt the basic rules of chess at 7 years old at Primary School. The teacher barely new the rules, and had been instructed by the headmaster to set up a chess club due to the chess fever created by Bobby Fischer’s victory. Then in Secondary school I joined the lunchtime chess club, this was a scam to enable my friends and I to jump the school dinner queue. But all of a sudden I got addicted to the game. We only had a short lunch, so we had to play fast. I joined a proper adult chess club at 11 years, and have played in leagues and tournaments ever since then. The club was called Godolphin which is a social club in Helston in Cornwall. I played in Leicester when I was a student, and I played in London whilst on placement. Then various clubs in Manchester area. For the amount of time invested in the game I should be better than I am, but on a good day I can still surprise people with my tactics. Who knows, one day I may even learn some positional play!! David, “you’re way to modest. – you are a much stronger player than you give yourself credit for”!
This is what David said about his game:
I played a Grand Prix Attack against the sicilian. Graham Phythian played a Dragon Formation. Neither side castled, in the middle game he exchanged his strong bishop on g7 for my Knight on c3 to create a pawn weakness, but this may have been ill judged as I was able to attack on the dark squares.
He offered me a draw as I think he thought my Bishop pair was too strong, I turned him down, and he later resigned as my pawns crashed through the centre. It was a fun game. X
