Eccles 3.5 – 2.5 Chorlton

A Division – Stockport League
This was the first match of the season that Eccles have played in the Stockport League.
Eccles are only fielding one team in the Stockport League this year, but there is a big possibility that we will be fielding more in the the 2025/26 season.
The Stockport League may not have as many strongly rated players as other leagues, but they are very supportive of Eccles and what we are trying to achieve. Also, the Stockport League holds no objections to playing league matches at our home venue – in actual fact Stockport really like it – well, why wouldn’t they? I’ve been told that our current home match venue is the best in the Northwest, which is awesome and great to know. Thank you Stockport and we all look forward to another great season of chess!
This was another winning result against Chorlton and well played Eccles!! Please remember though – just because we won the match it does not mean we’ve won the league. There’s still much to play for.
Man of the Match: Peter Mulleady. (play to see images)
Well, what can I say about Peter other than everyone I know has always had a good word for him. He is a firm believer in fair play and fewer the rules the better – players should be rewarded not penalised. If it’s not broke then dont fix it and let’s just get on with playing chess. These are my sentiments exactly, which is perhaps why Peter has decided to play for the newly up and coming Eccles Community Chess Club?
Last year Pete captained teams for Atherton in the Manchester League. After winning the League and the A Division Raynor Shield he decided he did not want to continue fielding teams in the MCF nor keep the Silverware his Atherton team worked so hard to achieve (for reasons I cannot disclose) and Peter decided to play for Eccles instead.
Thank you Peter for deciding to play for the only club in Manchester whose chess venue is in a designated player area with its own private entrance in a residence dwelling. Also, thank you for supporting all the good work we do in promoting this beautiful game.
I have not known Pete for very long, but long enough to appreciate his principles and the passion he shares in promoting the game. Peter spends much of his time maintaining a positive attitude to help and encourage players who are similar minded. Peter has a nurturing nature and gives encouragement and directs good and positive vibes to all those who recognise them. Pete, you have great team spirit and we at Eccles are absolutely delighted that you and yours are now playing for Eccles and making us stronger for having you join us ❤️♟️
After the match, and at the dead of night I just about managed to catch up with Pete as he was about to jump in his car to ask a foe brief description about his game.
This is what Pete said about his game:
“I played the Kings Indian Defence. In the middle game my opponent Nevil Barnes played very aggressively pushing his h pawn but then retreated and effectively left black material ahead. The match continued to the endgame and I eventually won. I led on time throughout the game and it was a good safe win”.
Thanks Pete, I hope I’ve got the above about right as standing on the street with a notepad and pen in the middle of the night taking notes is not the most ideal situation to find oneself, but hey – as a seasoned photojournalist it’s all part of my job description!
