MCF – Reyner Shield (quarter-final)
It was touch and go all through this excellently fought match. With much contemplation, apprehension, anticipation and expectation resulting in sheer exasperation for Eccles as the night progressed to it’s conclusion. Eccles lost to a better team!
Well played 3C’s, and good luck to both teams who reach the MCF Reyner Shield (semi-final)
As far as I know this was the first time Eccles Chess Club which was formed nearly 70yrs ago that a team had made it through to the A Division Reyner Shield quarter final, but sadly, getting through to the semi final was not meant to be, but hey, let’s look on the bright side as there is always another year!!
I remember saying to John Walton (one of the 3C’s captains) at the 2022 MCF – AGM that “Eccles will win the Reyner one day”and John replied, “In your Dreams”. Well, hold that thought John mo because my sights are firmly set on winning the Reyner, but it will have to wait until next year. Well, we all have our dreams and I intend to turn mine into a reality, so come on team Eccles, I know we can win this!!
Man of the Match: Alan Walton (3C’s) (Son of John Walton)
I have met Alan a few times whilst running Eccles Chess during these past five years. On this occasion Alan played second board against one of his old sparring partners Ali Jaunooby.
The winner of this game would have been crucial if the final result had ended in a draw because the result would have gone to board count.
The top board players Roger Williamson v Rob McLean were first to finish their game – resulting in a draw. This would make the winner of the second board count as the winning team of the match if the overall result had ended in a draw.
This is what Alan said about his game:
“Ali played the Catalan, it was an equal position going into middle game, Ali sacked a pawn then there were miscalculations on both sides, and eventually black ended up in bishop and knight v Rook endgame.
I offered a draw within the area of the miscalculation. Ali declined and that is when it went to the bishop and knight endgame”. Alan quoted, “Complicated is as complicated makes”. Thanks Alan for your brief description of the game.
