Great games were had by all!
It was lovely to see the Winwick Warriors again — it’s been a while.
Colin on board 5, who I’d lost to years ago, had never played at the house before — and he absolutely loved it.
Simion on board 2 said his twin brother was really upset when he saw that Eccles were not on the MCF fixture list this season. I did not want to explain, but did.
Myself and Captain Ken Johnson, who had played at the house before had a really good catch-up.
I had never met Martin the top-board player, but I have now, nice guy.

Arpad (1551) played brilliantly to achieve a draw against Eccles player Andy Roberts (1928) — a difference of 377 rating points. How cool is that?
The last time Arpad played at my house, it was a match v Chorlton in the Lancashire Summer League, Arpad was then playing for Eccles.
Anyway, I heard a very loud crash, bang, wallop coming from the playing area. When I went to investigate, Arpad’s opponent, Howard — who was sat nearest the door — had collapsed face down on the board and lay motionless, chess pieces everywhere.
In a state of shock, I immediately thought he’d died and asked everyone to pause their clocks.
After some confusion, Arpad lifted Howard back up into his chair. A few slaps around the face later, Howard very gingerly opened his eyes. I thought, phew, thank goodness he’s not dead! A sugary drink later, Howard composed himself and was helped outside for some fresh air.
After a short break, I took Howard’s and Arpad’s board outside, set it back up again using the score sheet, and we resumed the clocks.
Howard and Arpad played on in the cool of the night — and drew!
I can’t remember the match result but I will never forget the night when I thought someone had died playing chess at my house match venue, a memory I will never forget for the rest of my life.
