Warrington League
This was the first match of the season playing in the Warrington League. Eccles are only fielding one team in the Warrington League in a bid to field lower rated players to ensure they get a game. Unfortunately the MCF are not fielding an u1451 or a Development Division this season and I plan to field teams in interclub matches to bridge the rating gap.
Everyone who took part enjoyed their games, even those who lost because as we all know without repeating myself – losing is learning.
Man of the Match: Antony Mills (pictured with Tommy the Pooch)
Eccles club secretary Antony Mills took his opponents Queen early on in the game and played well.
This is what Ant said about his game:
“It was a blunder on his part and I took his queen”
Ant has always been a man of few words and here endeth Ant’s Match Report. Well said Ant, I couldn’t have put it better myself.
This is what Martyn Farnworth thought about his game:
Martyn started the game with the Van’t Kruijs Opening, named after the Dutch player of the same name. Martyn first move e3. Ant played b6 which stopped Martyn from continuing the VK and Martyn started to set up the king side fianchetto.
Tony countered in the same vein to nullify the attack, then there followed a very close and tight game where Martyn eventually moved into a stronger position which Ant struggled with. However Martyn in a moment of madness thought two or three moves ahead to get the position he desired but forgot the first principle “your next move” and ended up in a Queen King fork by Tony’s knight. From that point on Ant cautiously dismantled Martyn’s position to an eventual win in the face of a desperate attempt to force stalemate. Well played to Ant (Tony)
