Chorlton 0 – 4 Eccles
Summer League E Division

Team Eccles were in a confident frame of mind following recent good wins. However, the question still remained – could the momentum be maintained on our visit to super club Chorlton?

The result was a respectable 4-0 victory for Team Eccles. Technically, all our players were higher graded than Chorlton’s, but great credit must be given to our opponents for playing with great spirit and putting up severe resistance on every board, well in line with their status as a super club.

Man of the Match: Mohamed Gouda. (pictured)

Mohamed is one of the bedrocks of Eccles Chess Club. He is a modest and self effacing person, who always has a good word for everyone. He always does his utmost for Team Eccles, and tonight was no exception.

He found himself two pawns down, but not wishing to let the team down, he fought on with grim determination and eventually he was rewarded with a win.

Mohammed has sometimes played a little too fast, but tonight, with the advice of his Captain of Captains Barbara Farrar ringing in his ears, he fully utilised all the time at his disposal and was rewarded with a very good outcome.

A special word needs to be reserved for Stuart Sumner. (pictured) He has now joined Eccles permanently – entirely of his own free will – and he is a most valuable and welcome addition.

Darren Stanway also played well and was fully deserving of his win.

Captain James Buckley commented:

I was honoured to be asked to be acting captain for this match and was proud that the team played so well. I was also pleased that I repaid that trust with a win in my own game after much to-ing and fro-ing with a most valiant opponent.

All of the above would not have been possible without us all working together as a team. Team spirit and good sportsmanship is the key to make chess happen ♟️❤️
