Summer League guest player GM Danny Gormally
Hi Chess People,
GM Danny Gormally came to Manchester a day early to take part in the Manchester Congress and it was a pleasure to have him stay over. The thing is, I did not know until 1am. This was a golden opportunity, and as most of you know, I like to seize them quickly”
I had figured out that, as Eccles were playing a first team league match that same evening it would be awesome if I could give Danny a game as a guest player in the Summer League.
I messaged Danny and asked if he would like a game and, as he is one of the most active players in the UK, he jumped at the chance.
It was agreed by both team captains that Danny could play for Eccles as a welcomed guest. This was great because everyone loves to play a GM!!
Danilo Soares (2275) from Altrincham was delighted to know that he was going to be paired with a GM.
The match took place and thoroughly good games were had. Both Danny’s enjoyed themselves and it was big smiles all round.
The next day I took Danny to meet up with his good friend Eccles player GM Keith Arkell who was also in town taking part in the Manchester Congress.
Pictured: Before Danny left the Eccles Home match venue he said it was one of the nicest venues he had ever played in. I then took this photo of Danny stood alongside some of the Eccles trophies on the mantle.

On a final note:
Reg told me that the the Previous Winners page on the league website started in 1963 (though may have been going long before that.)
I’m absolutely over the moon that this opportunity presented itself and to see that sharing chess in the community is still going strong.
