Wigan 3 – 3 Eccles
D Division
South East Lancashire Summer Chess League
This match was Wigan’s 1st team v Eccles 3rd. Eccles played well to get a draw against a club fielding players from two divisions stronger than the Eccles team.
Ok, it was time to get a team together and send a shout out to our strongest players, but alas not all were available.
So, after some deep consideration I thought of Nathan Sarin. Shortly after I messaged Nathan he agreed to help Team Eccles by volunteering to be the driver for the night. Even though Nathan is a Development Division player he stood up to the mark when his help was needed! It’s good to know that Nathan is there in a crisis!! This kind of pulling together and team spirit is what makes clubs solid!!
Man of the Match: Nathan Sarin.
Nathan first joined Eccles in February/March (filmed nearest the camera playing Chess for Fun on Wednesday’s). Nathan agreed to join the ECF with an estimated rating of 1200 and played in his first league match in July. Since then he has won all of his games as you can see by looking at Nathan’s playing history I have high hopes for Nathan and at some point he will level out and find his natural playing strength. Until then I will continue to field him one board or more higher than before wherever possible.
This is what Nathan said about his game:
My opponent Lucy Bennett was probably a stronger player than me, but we were fairly evenly matched, the game started a bit cagey and then opened right up to a bit of a dog fight. I got a very advanced pawn but couldn’t quite convert, she then got her queen out of a tight corner to counter attack and almost mated me. Ended up with opposite pawns racing each other to the back rank but she had no time left and I still had half hour. She resigned when I was about to promote. Bit of an epic battle! Good game!!
