The players of Heywood chess club are a friendly group of people who have always been a pleasure to compete against in league matches. I was actually hankering after a respectable draw and we very nearly got one if it hadn’t had been for our lovely lady team player Leila Feiz who achieved a nice win in this closely fought match.
I’ll never forget the first time Eccles Community Chess Club won their first ever cup match which happened to be against Heywood. Captain Peter Hurn was there at the time and it was a real cliff-hanger. At the end of the match I thought it was a draw but when Peter told me that Eccles had won on board count I started jumping about with gay abandon like an overgrown school girl who had just got her A level results. I eventually calmed down when I realised players were looking at me like I’d gone mental. It was only a small trophy but by the way I was jumping about you’d think it was the size of a house. This was back in 2019 or was it 2021? I’ll never forget it…
Player of the Match: Leila Feiz.
I think this is the third time that our very own lovely Leila has been nominated at player of the match and well deservedly so. Not only is Leila an amazing team player but is there for all us Ladies & Learners on Ladies chess night.
Leila uses public transport to get about which can take many hours getting to and from the Eccles Chess venue to give invaluable tuition to all she can help. Leila does all this voluntarily and her chess tution and guidance is always freely given. The way Leila supports promoting chess in the community is invaluable and highly commended. The effort this lady puts into helping everyone she meets who wants to play better chess is lovely, just like she is. Leila if you’re reading this, “You are well loved and liked by all and please don’t stop playing chess and being the person you are. Ali Jaunooby is very lucky to have you by his side and we at Eccles are very lucky to have you on ours. Group hug my darling and hope to see you Monday.

This is what Eccles player Dave Boulden said about Leila’s game.
“Leila was White, and played against the Alekhine defence. She played a sharp line and came out of the opening with a good position.
She said that she was a bit tired, and forgot to defend her e5 pawn. So she went a pawn down.
She still had a good position, with her opponents bishop entombed on c8.
Leila kept attacking and her opponent failed to find the correct defence with her rooks and queen finding dominant squares.
A good attacking game”.
