Wigan 1.5 – 3.5 Eccles
C Division

Warrington League
Eccles has never played against Wigan in the Warrington League. In actual fact after looking through past records it looks like Wigan have never fielded teams in the Warrington League. I can only go back as far as 2021/22 and if anyone can confirm or dispute this please let me know.
This is the second time that Eccles has played in this league and as last year only fielded one team but I think Eccles will be fielding more teams next season. Warrington is a nice organisation but I think there are still one or two teaching problems and no doubt I will be mentioning what they are next season.
Man of the Match: James Buckley.
James played his first game for Eccles in June 2023. After a rocky start having lost his first three games his confidence remained intact. Mr Jim has played fifteen games since then and only lost twice. One of those times was when he turned up for a match completely frazzled and looking like drowned rat alongside Eccles player Colin Winstanley who was also trying to parking space near a venue that was almost impossible to find because of all the building and road works going on.
Jim is just BRILL!! He is so pro active in promoting chess in general. He’s the guy that all clubs would love to have in their team. He’s a good listener and I find his advice invaluable, plus if he did not proof read my match reports I would shudder to think what you readers would actually read as I am a tad diskexic. Seriously, Mr Jim helps me to get the grammar, punctuation and spelling correct, so if you notice any grammatical mistakes, it’s Jim’s fault, thanks Jim big hug
Jim stepped up to the mark when I asked if he could play and go back on himself to pick up player Chris Lysons. They had planned a curry that night but decided to postpone it to help the Eccles Eagles field a full team, proving there’s no (I) in team
This is what James said about his game…
My opponent played the Kings Indian Defence but quickly went out of the “book” by playing a double fianchetto. This allowed my pawn centre to dominate the game and after his position became very cramped, he blundered away a piece and then the exchange. He managed to drum up a strong counterattack, but with my advantage in material I was able to simplify into an easily won endgame.
