Chorlton played brilliantly to win the A Division Cup Final in the Stockport League.
Eccles got off to a bad start, a player down from the onset psychologically affected the rest of the Eccles players who tried really hard to make up the shortfall.
It’s amazing how a missing team player can affect a team’s performance. It is difficult to play as a team when a team player is missing.
For example, if the absent player had attended and won his game, Chorlton would have still won on board count but, if the said player had arrived, the Eccles team captain would not have needed to take time out away from his board to find a substitute player showing courtesy to the player who would have otherwise suffered a wasted journey. Showing courtesy to an opposing player as a sign of goodwill was probably a contributory factor to why the Captain could not settle into his game and subsequently lost. Also, if the Captain is not settled into his game it is difficult for the rest of the team to settle into theirs.
This is an unfortunate situation for any team to find themselves in and on the day the best team won, not because we were a player down but because, the best team always wins!
HAVING SAID THE ABOVE: Just because we LOST the CUP it does NOT mean we have LOST the LEAGUE.
Man of The Match: Marcial Flores (Totty)
Totty is a great guy, he’s played for the club for many years and not only was he the only Eccles player to win but was the first to finish his game and get stuck into the home made sausage rolls (bonus)
Totty commented: “We started with an unorthodox opening which developed in a complicated middle game. It’s a question of who will infiltrate the kingside first as we both castled king side. Fortunately my f-pawn was quicker to make some damage. He had a last attempt to deliver a checkmate but I defended well. He resigned after I trapped his queen which I think he had overlooked.”
