GM Daniel Gormally visited Eccles Community Chess Club

Chess Grandmaster Daniel Gormally paid a visit to Eccles following his participation in the Warrington RapidPlay tournament 23/05/24. Photographs taken at the event can be seen here https://eccleschess.com/event-history/ Danny pictured playing against Chorlton player Tetsuaki Sanada (Aka).

Danny’s short stay was driven by curiosity, having heard many positive things about our work in promoting chess within the community.

During his visit, Danny offered thoughtful advice, guidance, and encouragement—reinforcing his support for our efforts and providing insight on how we can continue to grow and improve.

He was genuinely impressed by both of our Eccles venues, particularly our home match location. Describing it as ideal for competitive play, Danny praised the welcoming atmosphere and was surprised that anyone could find fault with such a fine dedicated chess venue. His feedback was overwhelmingly positive, giving our home venue a resounding thumbs-up. 👍

So taken was he with the setting that he even agreed to a series of impromptu blitz games against one of Eccles Chess Club’s longest-standing members, Marcial “Totty” Flores.

Later in the day, Danny accompanied myself and Totty to the Eccles Community Town Hall—the future venue of our first-ever FIDE/ECF Classic Tournament scheduled for 27/07/25. He provided hands-on support in helping to arrange the layout, spending over an hour moving tables and discussing the optimal setup. His input was invaluable in fine-tuning our plans for what promises to be a landmark fundraising event for the chess community of Eccles. In the evening, Danny delivered a presentation at our Eccles High Street venue as part of our “Ladies and Learners in Chess” initiative. He was warmly welcomed, and his talk concluded with enthusiastic applause from all in attendance.

Following the presentation, Danny participated in a book and board signing, and engaged with attendees during NM Rodger Williamson’s coaching session and Jason Barber’s mentoring session.

The evening ended with a few more friendly games before winding down for the night.

It was a privilege to host Danny and to receive his support for our vision. We are grateful for the time he spent with us and look forward to collaborating with him again in the future.

Thank you once again, Danny, for your support, insight, and encouragement—from Barbara and the entire chess community of Eccles, Salford, and Manchester.
