3C’s 3 – 1 Eccles

Development Division

Summer League

This is the first year that the South East Lancashire Summer Chess League has introduced a Development Division which was proposed by myself for junior and female players who are new to playing competitive chess.

Great result for 3C’s (Children’s Chess Club) 3C’s first formed in 1978 to provide school children an opportunity to learn the game which has evolved to be known as the strongest Super Chess Club in the North West!

Eccles Captain Christine Dean (76yrs) accompanied by new lady player Georgina Charleston arrived late due to bad traffic. On arrival both ladies were flustered and needed a minute to catch their breath.

Christine and Georgina would like to say a big thank you to all at 3C’s for their warm welcome and for making the ladies of team Eccles feel at ease.

Christine said if there was a ‘Welcoming Cup Award’ 3C’s would have definitely been deserving of it! Thank you 3C’s for setting a good example of how to meet and greet new players.

Player of Recognition: Georgina Charlston closely followed by Nathan Sarin on board one who was the only Eccles player to have won his game.

I am absolutely bowled over by Georgina! This was Georgina’s 1st league match after recently learning how the pieces move and had only ever practiced notation on her own.

Even though Georgina did not win her game, Christine decided to nominate her because of how she kept her cool, took her time and notated over 50 moves (mostly correct).

Georgina was second to the last to finish her game and very well done to this new lady learning how to play better chess xx

Captain James Buckley analysed Georgina’s game as this:

When this was the position, black (Georgina) has the best position. The engine reckons that she is the equivalent of a pawn ahead. If she plays d4xc3 she ruins white’s queenside pawns. She is ahead in development and has lovely open files for her rooks. I’d say she has a winning position. She played f6 instead – it is a perfectly logical move and I understand why she played it – but it is her pawn on d4 that has problems, and the best way to deal with it is to exchange pawns on c3 and mess up white’s pawn structure.

The analysis was done by a player who is only 1470 or so. Better players may have different opinions, but my opinion is that Georgina had the game by the scruff of the neck and with a bit of luck she would have won. Both she and Team Eccles can be proud of her efforts. Thanks Jim for your evaluation and we look forward to your next analysis!
