Cup Match Report 04/07/24

Thursday 04/07/24

Eccles 3.5 – 2.5 Chorlton

Cup Match

Summer League

Great result for Eccles against Super-Club Chorlton in a bid to keep hold of the SELSCL Alan Yarker Cup.

It was really unfortunate that it was election day and Chorlton had to inform Eccles that they had no other choice but to default bottom board due to player availablity.

It is always more difficult to field an away team for reasons like having to travel to the venue and the captain having the responsibility of sorting out transport as well as picking the team (this not an easy task).

Sometimes volunteers who are club members give up their time and take players to and from a match without actually playing themselves.

We all appreciate players who do this in support of their club, its players and a way to help promote chess in the community.

As Chorlton were unable to field a bottom board player Eccles Captain Dave Toole had to ask Dave Boulden to stand down and because of this Eccles had lost their driver.

Even though Dave was no longer playing he would have still provided a lift if asked. This is something Dave has done many times before and thank you David for your support of which we are all very appreciative.

To save David from having to do the above Stephen Farrar (president of Eccles) stepped in to do the running and Dave was able to enjoy a nice relaxing evening. Nice one Steve!

All cup matches toss for who plays White. Captain Dave Toole tossed the coin and Captain Daniel Lee called and won white on odds.

Man of the Match: Ali Jaunooby

Ali has locked horns with Captain Daniel Lee in the past and lost hard fought matches against him, but not on this occasion.

If there is a draw in a cup match, it is then down to the result of the top board to decide the outcome. If the match had have resulted in a draw Eccles would have won on board count. It was a nice win for Ali.

Another reason why Ali is nominated as Man of the Match is not just because of his aggressive and attacking style of playing but also because of the gentle, understanding, patient way he teaches how to play the game.

If anyone ever gets the chance to go through their notation sheet with Ali, you will experience invaluable chess tuition. Ali is one of Eccles’ backbone players and Ali, we love you!!
